On October 9, 2026, the Nobel Foundation put this year’s prize sum at 12 million Swedish kronor per category, with the awards to be presented on December 10 — the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death — in Stockholm and, for the Peace Prize, in Oslo.

Nobel week is the one stretch of the calendar when laboratory science competes directly with politics and sport for front pages. The announcements open with Physiology or Medicine, decided by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet, and roll through Physics and Chemistry from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Literature from the Swedish Academy, Peace from the Norwegian Nobel Committee, and finally the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences. Each reveal is brief — a name, a citation, a short explanation — but the machinery behind it runs all year: nominations close in February, and specialist committees spend months testing claims, reading results and arguing over who truly changed a field.

The 12 million kronor figure is more than a headline number. The Nobel Foundation’s ability to hold the prize at that level reflects the endowment Alfred Nobel left in his 1895 will, and the sum — paid alongside a gold medal and a diploma — is deliberately set high enough to free a researcher from the next grant application rather than merely reward the last one. Universities feel the effect too: a laureate’s department typically sees students, collaborators and funders arrive in the following admissions and funding cycles.

Prestige with a calendar

The December 10 ceremonies give that prestige a fixed ritual: the King of Sweden presents the science and literature prizes at Stockholm Concert Hall, while the Peace Prize is awarded at Oslo City Hall, reflecting Nobel’s instruction that a Norwegian committee choose its recipient. Between the October announcements and the December stage sits a season of lectures, interviews and scrutiny in which new laureates explain their work to the public — a built-in round of science communication that few other honours impose.

This year the week has already honoured the founders of optogenetics in Medicine and the chemistry of mirror-image molecules in Chemistry, two tools-and-concepts prizes whose influence runs through modern neuroscience and pharmaceutical manufacturing. GlobeNews9’s Health & Science Desk will cover the remaining announcements and the December ceremonies as they land.
