Tesco customers urged to watch out as criminals try to steal bank details

Tesco customers are being warned to look out for a scam email which is offering shoppers a fake £500 gift card.

The fraudulent email contains a link to a survey, which supposedly asks them a couple of questions, before they can win the discount.

However, this email correspondence has nothing to do with Tesco and this supermarket gift card does not exist.

Consumer champion Which? is warning customers that the survey is being carried out to get shoppers’ personal financial information.

The scam email reads: “Win a £500 Tesco Gift Card! Shop til you drop with this generous gift card from Tesco, your one-stop destination for groceries, household essentials and more.

“Enter now for your chance to indulge in a shopping spree.”

In response to the scam, a Tesco spokesperson said: “This online competition is fake and has nothing to do with Tesco.

“We are investigating this and urge customers to remain vigilant to these types of scams and phishing emails.”

This latest fake email message comes after Which? warned consumers about a separate, but unrelated, scam tax being sent to university students.

A tax message was delivered to students who are currently receiving the latest maintenance loan payments.

The message’s sender pretends to a representative from Student Finance England but the text includes a link to a phishing website which looks like the official Government website.

According to the Action Fraud website, there are ways for people to spot a potential phishing email or text message.

The scam watchdog said: “The message might be from a company you don’t normally receive communications from, or someone you do not know.

“You may just have a hunch. If you are suspicious, you should report it.
