Rishabh Pant’s spot in the ODI team has recently been under criticism. He had not scored a century in one-day internationals until Sunday when he did it against England in challenging conditions.
This is his second century of the tour, following a century in the fifth Test. This innings came under unusual circumstances, as he walked in at no. 4 after both Indian openers had been dismissed. Virat Kohli also left for a poor score, and India was 38-3 in a 261-run chase.
Pant delivered one of the finest ODI innings for India in over three years in the decisive. Only KL Rahul had scored a century in ODIs for India since the start of 2020. That happened again in 2021, this time against England. After that, no other Indian batter has achieved three digits.
Pant’s century helped India win the one-day international series 2-1. He celebrated his century by hitting six boundaries in his final seven balls. It featured 5 consecutive 4s against David Willey. Then he reverse-swept Joe Root for the game-winning four.
Pant was declared the player of the match for his fabulous knock, after the game, he said, “hopefully I will remember my first ODI century for the rest of my life. But when I was in there, I was just focusing on one ball at a time. (Coming in at 25 for 2) When a team is under pressure and you bat like that, that’s what you aspire to do.
(Quick end to the chase) I enjoy playing in England and will do whatever I can do to keep enjoying my cricket. The more cricket you play, the more experience you get. (Bowling) It was the best pitch to bat on, so credit to our bowlers for keeping them to 260. Not only this game, but they have also bowled well through the series. Not only this series either, but they have also been excellent all year.”
Pant will next be seen in action against the West Indies in T20Is.
