Poundland will be closing another two branches in a tough blow to the high street, reports have said.

The two stores closing were just opened six months ago after taking over former Wilko sites.

A Poundland store in Jackson Square in Bishop’s Stortford is closing for good on May 4.

The other store on Bradfield Road in Hillsborough Sheffield is due to close its doors for the final time on April 20.

The Sheffield store moved into Wilko on Bradfield Road, in Hillsborough, after the collapse last year.

Disappointed customers took to social media to express their concerns.

A Facebook user said: “That’s a shame.”

Another asked: “Closing already?

“This must be disappointing for the Wilko staff who thought their jobs had been saved when Poundland took over the shop.”

A Poundland spokesperson said: “We know that will be disappointing to customers and colleagues alike.

“We will, of course, do all we can, to look for other opportunities for colleagues.”

Poundland bought up 71 ex-Wilko stores when the retailer fell into administration last year.

The discounter quickly turned around the locations and opened up many of the stores under its own brand before Christmas.

Since then several stores have closed down including locations in Ellesmere Port, Glashiels, Alfreton and the Sailmakers Shopping Centre in Ipswich.

Last year the retailer announced huge expansion plans for the UK as it also presses ahead with more store openings.

The discount retailer said it will open or relocate 75 stores by the end of December 2023.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Poundland had already opened new stores in Telford (Forge Retail Park) and Stafford (Queens Retail Park).

All new Poundland stores will stock grocery and household ranges, including Pepco clothing.

The new Poundland stores plan to open include an additional former Wilko (Birmingham Fort), and six former M&Co units (Portishead, Crewkerne, Midsomer Norton, Faversham, Newport and Wells).

GB News has contacted Poundland asking for comment.
