England team’s interim head coach Paul Collingwood revealed that fast bowler, Mark Wood, could well miss out on the rest of the series against the West Indies after an elbow injury.
Wood didn’t bowl in the second innings of the first Test which ended in a draw. He has an impingement in his bowling elbow which results in immense pain when he tries to bowl. As a result, he may be sent for a scan and could miss out on the series.
“He is sore. The sensible option is to send him for a scan and see what he is going to be like for the rest of the series. He has not bowled in the second innings here so you would say it is unlikely he will feature in Barbados,” Collingwood stated.
Fortunately for England, frontline pacer Ollie Robinson has all but recovered and could come back into the playing XI in place of Wood.
“Ollie is looking pretty positive at the moment. His recovery has been excellent. The backroom staff have done a great job on Ollie and he bowled a couple of spells today and is getting the ball through really well so that is looking really positive,” Collingwood added.
Former England pacer Steve Harmison feels that Wood bowled a lot of unnecessary overs back in the Ashes which led to the worsening of the elbow. There were times when he could have been saved with an eye on the future but England ended up over bowling him, as per Harmison.
“He bowled a lot [in Sydney] and I remember thinking that we’re going to need him further down the line. He just kept bowling dead overs. England play a lot of cricket and there’s no preparation time going into each tour.”
“So you’ve got to be careful how you use people and the rest periods in between and when they start going again. He has bowled a lot, it’s been a while since he’s been injured, and he’s missed a lot of cricket,” Harmison mentioned in a conversation with TalkSPORT.
