Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Shreyas Iyer was himself surprised at the way Pat Cummins batted against Mumbai Indians (MI) on a tricky wicket at the MCA Stadium in Pune on Wednesday.

Coming in at No.7, Cummins played an innings for the ages, finishing on 56 off just 15 balls to take his side home with 24 balls to spare. It was a knock that included 10 boundary hits and some of the cleanest hits in the IPL.

MI captain Rohit Sharma himself was completely stunned and at a loss for words. The knock also equaled KL Rahul’s record for the fastest fifty ever (14 balls). Speaking about the same, Shreyas was in awe of Cummins’ batsmanship.

“Extraordinary! I couldn’t believe the way he (Cummins) was hitting the ball. Because yesterday in the nets, he was getting bowled now and then, I was batting in the nets beside him then,” Shreyas said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Although KKR did end up on the winning side, Shreyas was disappointed that it was left to a miraculous knock in the end. He urged the top-order batters need to take more responsibility at the top.

“During the timeout, the plan was for Venky to drop anchor and tell Pat to just swing at everything because that’s what he was doing before too. When I went in to bat, I told him to just time the ball because he was overhitting the ball a bit.”

“We have to take responsibility as top-order batters. All of us have the ability to hit the ball long. In the powerplay in both innings, the pitch was quite the same. After the powerplay, it got a lot easier I guess,” Shreyas added.

With the win against MI, KKR has now moved to the top of the table with 3 wins in 4 matches.
