Former Indian player Wasim Jaffer said he isn’t surprised by MS Dhoni‘s decision to hand over CSK captaincy to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja ahead of IPL 2022. On Thursday, MS Dhoni relinquished CSK captaincy after leading the franchise in 12 seasons.

Less than two years before Dhoni announced his sudden retirement from all formats of international cricket through an Instagram post on August 15, 2020. The ‘Captain Cool’ had already quit the captaincy of the Indian team in all formats in January 2017 and handed over the reins to Virat Kohli.

In a similar fashion, Dhoni decided to pass the captain’s armband to Ravindra Jadeja in IPL. Dhoni led CSK in 213 matches in 12 seasons and the franchise won four IPL titles (2010, 2011, 2018 & 2021) and two Champions League T20 trophies (2010  and 2014).

We are used to MS Dhoni announcing this kind of stuff: Wasim Jaffer

Jaffer, who was the batting coach of Punjab Kings until IPL 2021, said Dhoni breaking such news is habitual for him. The former Indian player also said that Dhoni’s choice of naming Jadeja as his successor at CSK was significant.

“We are used to MS Dhoni announcing this kind of stuff. So to be honest it doesn’t surprise me. He has always made such announcements where you don’t expect it. I am actually not surprise but I think in a way he has made up his mind that this is probably his last season and I think it’s a good time,” Jaffer told ESPNcricinfo.

“I think he has passed on the baton to the right person and I think it’s a good time for Ravindra Jadeja to learn under him while he is still there to guide him,” he further said.

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan mentioned that Dhoni’s move to relinquish captaincy and pass the baton to Jadeja wasn’t a sudden decision but planned beforehand. CSK will play their first match of IPL 2022 against Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata Knight Riders on March 26 (Saturday) at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.
