Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was delighted as he struck in his very first over to dismiss West Indian batter, Nicholas Pooran, in the first ODI between the two sides in Ahmedabad.
Having won the toss, Rohit Sharma’s decision to bowl first was vindicated by the bowlers. Mohammed Siraj dismissed Shai Hope before Washington Sundar took two wickets in one over.
Things were looking bleak for Windies but Pooran was still at the crease. However, his stay at the crease was cut short by Chahal. On a tossed-up delivery, Pooran attempted a full-blooded slog sweep.
Unfortunately for him, the ball sneaked under his bat and hit him plumb in front of the stumps. The umpire turned the appeal down but upon review, it was confirmed that the ball was crashing into the middle stump.
Earlier in the day, Deepak Hooda was given his debut cap in ODIs. His return marks a 7-year absence as he made his debut for the Indian team back in 2015. Siraj and Prasidh Krishna along with Shardul Thakur were India’s pace options.
As for the batting order, Ishan Kishan was confirmed as the opener while Suryakumar Yadav will bat at No.4 in the absence of Shreyas Iyer.
