India dominated day 1 of the first Test in Mohali in what was a historic Test match in many respects. India ended the day on 356/6 with Rishabh Pant (96) narrowly missing out on his fifth Test ton. It was a collective batting effort from the Indian batters which paid dividends with some of the Test regulars not being a part of the squad.
The Test match was Virat Kohli’s 100th and the first for Rohit Sharma as India’s Test skipper. Likewise, the day was decorated by the few other memorable moments which went onto becoming key records at the end of the day’s play.
For Sri Lankan bowlers, it was about toiling hard and getting key wickets at the right time. They took two wickets in each session with Lasith Embuldeniya taking the most wickets. Suranga Lakmal playing his last Test series picked just one wicket on the first day as did Vishwa Fernando and Lahiru Kumara.
Meanwhile, as India ended on top on the first day, we take a look at some of the key stats at the end of the day’s play in Mohali.
12: Virat Kohli became the 12th Indian cricketer to play 100 Test matches and in the process joined an elite list of cricketers with names like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble amongst others. He also went past 8000 Test runs and became just the sixth Indian batsman to do so after Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Virender Sehwag
5: Rohit Sharma became the fifth Indian captain to lead India across the three formats. Virender Sehwag, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane are the other four. Also, he became the fifth cricketer to lead in all three formats against the same team and the first Indian to do so.
5: Rishabh Pant was dismissed for the fifth time in the 90s in 28 Test matches, Only Sachin Tendulkar has the dubious record of being dismissed in the nervous nineties more often than any other cricketer.
5: This was the fifth time that the top-7 Indian batters scored above 25-plus in the same innings, The last time that happened with the India batting lineup was against Australia in the 2014 Adelaide Test.
19: This was Pant’s 19th score of fifty-plus in international cricket which takes him to joint second with former Indian wicketkeeper Farokh Engineer. Only MS Dhoni has a higher number as an Indian wicketkeeper, with 123 fifty-plus scores.
