Due to a hip injury, Heather Knight, the captain of England, will miss the remainder of the Commonwealth Games as well as the Hundred.
Knight sustained the injury during the opening T20I of the bilateral series against South Africa at Chelmsford on July 21, and has not participated in either of England’s two games thus far at the Commonwealth Games.
The England team stated on Wednesday that Knight would continue to get treatment because the injury failed to settle down as envisaged.
Since no substitute players can be called up for the Commonwealth Games, Nat Sciver will continue to serve as England’s captain, leaving the host nation with a 14-person roster for the remaining matches. Knight will stay with the team in Birmingham. “She’s not in a good place. She’s better than she has been in the last few days, still in a bit of pain with her hip. It’s probably going to be a bit quick to play against New Zealand. She went and saw our team doctor and had another scan, stand-in skipper Sciver said.
In Knight’s absence, England has won both of its group games thus far, with 17-year-old Alice Capsey excelling at No. 3, Sciver at No. 4, and Amy Jones occupying the No. 5 position.
The winner of Group B will be determined by the result of England’s last group match against New Zealand on Thursday. England is already guaranteed a spot in the semi-finals at Edgbaston.
Australia, who defeated Pakistan by 44 runs in their last group match on Wednesday, will face the second-placed team in Group B. The winner of Wednesday night’s match between India and Barbados will face the Group B leaders in Saturday’s semi-finals.
