Alfa Romeo Reintroduces the Giulia with Multiple Composite Components

Alfa Romeo’s 2020 Giulia GTA has an excellent weight-to-power ratio thanks to a total weight reduction of 220 pounds achieved by the adoption of lightweight materials such as carbon fiber for the driveshaft, hood, roof, front bumper and more.

Alfa Romeo is celebrating its 110th anniversary by reintroducing its classic Giulia GTA, inspired by the 1965 Giulia GTA Gran Turismo Alleggerita. Alleggerita means lightened in Italian, and this version of the Giulia GTA takes that term to heart by implementing carbon fiber and other composite components to lightweight the vehicle throughout.

Aerodynamics were key to the engineers of the Giulia and the team implemented knowledge gained from Formula 1 in designing the car. The central exhaust system is integrated in the carbon fiber rear diffuser and on the GTAm model a larger front splitter and a carbon fiber rear wing optimize the aerodynamics.

Lightweighting was achieved not only by using carbon fiber for the driveshaft, hood, roof, front bumper, front wheel arches and rear wheel arch inserts, but also by including other composite materials throughout the vehicle. From the motorsports industry, the polycarbonate resin Lexan was used in the side and rear window frames. There are even matte carbon inserts in the interior of the GTAm. The Giulia weighs only 3,350 pounds and accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.6 seconds thanks to 540 horsepower.  The impressive weight-to-power ratio is 6.2 lb/hp.

Only 500 Giulia GTA and GTAm models will be manufactured. Not only will the new owners receive a collectible and powerful vehicle, Alfa Romeo is also including a personalized experience package kit including a Bell helmet in special GTA livery, a full racing set by Alpinestars (race suit, gloves and shoes) and access to a specific driving course devised by the Alfa Romeo Driving Academy.
